SS 309/309S are the austenitic round bars dedicated for the high temperature applications. SS 309/309S round bars contain a sufficient amount of chromium that offers high corrosion resistance to oxidation and maintains excellent strength and room temperature. The required temperature for SS 309/304S is generally considered high up to 1038 Degree C, though frequent thermal cycling is not recommended for this grade it may reduce the oxidation resistance as much lower up to 1010 Degree C. As chromium is high and nickel is lower composition is leaded within SS 309/309S round bars, therefore using under carburizing atmosphere is not suggested because SS 309/309S round bars have only midrange resistance to absorb carbon. However, using SS 309 round bars is recommended across the nitriding, thermal cyclic, oxidizing, etc applications.

Basically both SS 309/309S round bars are almost similar, the only difference is of carbon proportion. SS 309 is carbon version steel, SS 309S is lower one, and SS 309H is the highest carbon version steel bars. Being a low carbon version alloy, SS 309S offers ease of fabrication, excellent creep resistance, and many more, SS 309 can be welded easily due to its good chemical properties.
